Debark University strongly condemns the Killing of Endemic Walia Ibex in Simien Mountains National Park
Debark Univetsity Community expresses deep concern and outrage over the recent killing of the endemic and endangered Walia Ibex (Capra walie) in Simien Mountains National Park.
The Walia Ibex, found only at the #UNESCO registered Semien Mountains National Park, is a national symbol and a critical part of the country’s unique biodiversity. The illegal killing of this iconic species is not only a tragic loss of wildlife but also a setback to decades of conservation efforts and scientific research.
Staff at the Department of Tourism and Hotel Management, stated, “This act is a clear violation of both national and international wildlife protection laws. It threatens the fragile ecosystem of the Simien Mountains and undermines our efforts to preserve Ethiopia’s natural heritage.”

he University calls on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice. We also urge the government and conservation organizations to strengthen protection measures in the park and enhance community awareness to prevent future incidents.
As an institution committed to environmental stewardship and research, Debark Univetsity stands ready to support conservation efforts through scientific collaboration, education, and public outreach.
