The discussion, selection of focus areas, and development of the MoU took several months. It was officially signed on August 10, 2025, in the city of Kiel, Germany, by Dr. Gashaw Gismu, Vice President for Academic, Research, Technology Transfer, and Community Service, on behalf of DKU.

More than 350 years after its founding in 1665, Kiel University (CAU) still adheres to its founding slogan, “Pax Optima Rerum: peace is the most valuable asset.” The university addresses the major issues of our day, such as nutrition, energy, environmental and cultural change, and health, through research, teaching, and information sharing. By uniting their expertise and resources, DKU and CAU aim to advance academic excellence; address common regional and global challenges; enhance institutional capacity through resource sharing, information exchange, and collaborative development initiatives; foster international engagement and cross-cultural understanding by promoting the mobility and interaction of students, faculty, and staff; and address socioeconomic issues in their respective regions by leveraging their unique strengths to promote sustainable development.

The MoU remains in effect for five years, with the possibility of extension, opening new avenues for students, faculty, and communities to engage in meaningful international collaboration

In his opening remarks, Dr. Gashaw Gismu, Vice President for Academic Research, Technology Transfer, and Community Service, emphasized the significance of the proposed programs. He also reaffirmed the university’s long-term vision of establishing a dedicated College of Engineering. Dr. Gashaw encouraged faculty members to engage actively in the curriculum review process.

The workshop included presentations of needs assessment studies prepared by subject-specific committees. Faculty participants offered valuable feedback, which will be incorporated into the revised curriculum documents to be submitted for external evaluation.
