The partnership is paving the way for the Semien Mountains Research Center, which will focus on the ecological, environmental, and socio-economic dynamics of the UNESCO-listed Semien Mountains, renowned for their unique biodiversity and cultural value.

During his visit to UFS-ARU, Dr. Asmamaw Zegeye, President of Debark University, emphasized the importance of international collaboration in addressing biodiversity loss, climate change, sustainable tourism, and the livelihoods of highland communities. Professor Ralph Clark, Director of ARU, welcomed the visit and pledged support for the project, describing the Semien Mountains as both Ethiopia’s pride and a global treasure.

The initiative aligns with Debark University’s vision of becoming a center of excellence in highland and mountain studies, while strengthening Ethiopia’s contribution to global ecological and environmental research. Ms. Bulelwa Moikwatlhai, Assistant Director of the International Office at UFS QwaQwa Campus, also reaffirmed ARU’s commitment to supporting Debark University through technical exchange, capacity building, and joint research projects.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Gashaw Gismu, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Research, Technology Transfer, and Community Service, stated that the proposed undergraduate programs in Software Engineering and Geology are aligned with both national and local development priorities. He noted that the programs had already undergone internal review and validation in a previous workshop. Dr. Gashaw also expressed confidence that this workshop would further enrich the curricula by incorporating national and international perspectives.

The workshop featured presentations of needs assessment studies prepared by subject-specific committees. External reviewers, who participated virtually, provided constructive feedback following the presentations.

Dr. Mekonnen Wagaw from Bahir Dar University and Mr. Lake Fereaw from the University of Gondar reviewed and provided feedback on the proposed BSc program in Software Engineering. Dr. Ephirem Getahun from Arba Minch University reviewed and offered feedback on the proposed BSc program in Geology.

The insightful contributions of the external reviewers and the productive discussions during the workshop are expected to significantly enhance the relevance, quality, and practical applicability of the proposed programs.

The event included both in-person and virtual sessions. Dr. Abebe Tewachew, Editor-in-Chief of RDJS, opened the in-person program with an overview of the journal’s background and vision. Dr. Gebeyehu Yibeltal, Associate Editor, presented the editorial policies and submission guidelines, while Mr. Birhanu Alemneh, from the journal’s ICT team, showcased the newly developed RDJS website, highlighting its main features and user interface.

The virtual presentations added valuable international perspectives. PhD Candidate Gali Alrajafi—a lecturer, journal manager, and researcher at Universitas Muhammadiyah Lampung, Indonesia—shared experiences on managing a new journal and attracting quality submissions. Dr. Dawit Dibekulu from Bahir Dar University provided strategic advice and insights to support the growth of RDJS.

Participants engaged actively throughout the workshop, asking relevant questions and contributing to meaningful discussions.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Gashaw Gismu, Vice President for Research, Technology Transfer, and Community Service, expressed appreciation to all presenters and contributors. He emphasized the value of the workshop’s insights and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to supporting RDJS as a key platform for scientific advancement and knowledge sharing.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Asmamaw Zegeye, President of Debark University welcomed guests, researchers, and members of the university community. He emphasized the university’s dedication to fostering a strong research culture. Dr. Asmamaw highlighted that since its establishment, Debark University’s faculty and students have been actively engaged in problem-solving projects that address local and national challenges in areas such as agriculture, governance, public health, climate resilience, and renewable energy. He stated that the purpose of the conference is not only to share research findings but also to contribute to the creation of a dynamic and collaborative academic environment.

Dr. Serawit Handiso, CEO for Research and Community Engagement Affairs at the Higher Education Development Support (HEDS), FDRE Ministry of Education delivered a keynote address virtually from Ohio, USA. His speech focused on the ongoing higher education reform agenda, discussing both challenges and opportunities. He underscored the importance of scholarly forums like this in supporting Ethiopia’s policy development and educational transformation.

The conference features 29 research presentations delivered both virtually and in person, and it will continue on June 13, 2025.

The workshop aimed to bring together representatives from CBHE projects implemented in Ethiopia. The purpose of the gathering was to facilitate the exchange of experiences, reflect on both the challenges and the impact of the projects, and explore opportunities for enhancing collaboration and ensuring the sustainability of results.

During the meeting, participants had the opportunity to ask questions related to project implementation. Attendees were encouraged to submit their questions in advance to ensure they could be addressed effectively during the sessions.

It is well known that Debark University is actively involved in two European Union-funded projects: one focused on capacity building and the other on academic mobility. These projects play a vital role in strengthening the university’s international partnerships and improving the quality of higher education through cross-border cooperation.

Eskedar highlighted the importance of a strong CV, professional communication, and connecting with potential PhD supervisors. She also shared resources on major Australian scholarships.
